    Camp Oconto answered our questions

Who are you as an organization?

Founded in 1924, Camp Oconto is a traditional girls overnight camp located on the beautiful shores of Eagle Lake north of Kingston, Ontario. Oconto is a supportive environment where campers can express themselves, build self-confidence, gain skills and make lifelong friendships. Over 18 activities are offered on 80 acres of land & 2km of shoreline. Campers are ages 4-16.

    • Special needs: Yes, mild support.
A few of our campers have special needs.

What do you do differently or uniquely well?

"Oconto is an all-girls camp known for fostering an environment where campers feel comfortable being their true, authentic selves. Our philosophy is to help each individual grow socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically in a safe and happy environment under the leadership of mature staff. Oconto is the perfect setting to explore nature and discover yourself. Campers are encouraged to enthusiastically embrace new challenges while encouraging and supporting their peers. It is a place where lasting memories are made, and enduring friendships begin. Oconto campers are proud of their camp and are unified by the positive camp spirit we encourage. "

Who are your staff and counsellors?

"We are incredibly lucky to have such dedicated, compassionate, and creative leaders on the staff team at Oconto. Staff are carefully selected for their ability to understand and nurture each individual, with most of our staff having been Oconto campers themselves. They are chosen for their leadership skills, maturity, and experience working with young people, making them fantastic role models. Counsellors must have the necessary qualifications for the activity they teach, with all staff being certified in First Aid and all waterfront staff having their National Lifeguard certification. Our staff know how to make anything a fun and exciting experience and welcome new campers with warmth, positivity, and unwavering care and support! "

What do families need to know about registration?

"Registration for Oconto begins with filling out a camper application from that will be reviewed by our director team. Our summer dates are posted at the beginning of September and registration generally opens at the end of September. Due to limited spaces available at camp, late applications will be added to a waitlist and updated regularly. To complete an Oconto camper application, please visit www.campoconto.com and click the purple “Apply Now” button in the top right-hand corner. If you have any problems or questions concerning the application process, do not hesitate to reach out and we will be happy to help! "

The Our Kids review of Camp Oconto

    our take

Oconto is one of the great girls’ camps in the country, with a long history of consistent leadership. Founded in 1924, Lisa and Bruce Wilson have directed the camp since 1982, taking over from Lisa’s parents, who purchased Oconto in 1949. Lisa arrived for her first camp season at three months of age, and she has been back every year since. She’s been a leader in the camping world for decades, having served as president of the Society of Camp Directors, and as member of the board of the Ontario Camps Association. In all, there’s an impressive pedigree here, one that is still evident throughout the camp, from the architecture—the main hall, for one, has been in continual use since 1924—to the values that are promoted through the programming. The sense of tradition is palpable and animates the Oconto experience; girls who have attended feel that they are part of a family, one that is shared with the campers who went before. The activities are varied, though it’s the experience of the culture of the camp that campers typically treasure the most.

15 years of joy and growth at Camp Oconto!

15 years of camp and 20 years later as a mom and teachers assistant I am still pulling tricks from my "tickle-trunk" that I learned at Camp Oconto. My years spent at camp have been the best pre-requisite for being a parent. In the words of June Labbett, "if it's not fun, forget it." -Oconto Alumna (Years at Camp Oconto: 1986 - 2001) ... Safe, positive and inclusive environment...

Camp Oconto has given my two daughters experiences that reach far beyond the month they spend there. The safe, positive and inclusive environment at Oconto fosters confidence in both social skills and life skills. My girls often reflect upon times at camp and relate them to what is happening in their non-camp life--school, sports teams and inter-personal relationships. I cannot thank Camp Oconto enough for the good times they've had at camp and the life dividends it's paid. My eldest daughter still talks about the "friendship" roll she did in Kayaking! And watching my youngest daughter jump off High-Tower on visitors day--smile on her face--brought a smile to my face. Thank you Oconto for giving my children a lifetime of memories, friendships and confidence. ... Show More

    Director's Message

Bronwyn and Ted Gorsline, Camp Directors

Oconto is a place to be yourself!

Character building programs will challenge and inspire campers to be strong, optimistic, and kind. Camp Oconto is a place to belong and to feel encouraged. Learn to live a balanced life. Trust yourself and others. You will also learn that it is great to succeed but equally important to sometimes fail. Learn to get up and try again.

    Stories

    • A school assignment.
Something that is very important to me is camp. I go to Camp Oconto. At camp you can do whatever you like, be who-ever you are, and dress however you like, and no one will care. And one of the most important parts of camp is friends. Some good friends I have made at camp are Gabriella, Ashley, Natasha, Kara and many others. All the best people are important. At camp without them, it is quite a different atmosphere. When I left camp I really did NOT want to leave all of my friends, memories, activities, counsellors, food, songs and everything else. Next year I'll go for a month.
    • Oconto
Well, first of all two weeks goes by way too fast! I had an amazing time once again! Thanks for making Oconto so awesome! I made a ton of new friends, the food was great, and I managed to try every activity. I'll see you next year! I hope the rest of your summer is a blast. Kristi.
    • What Oconto really does
Oconto is a traditional camp. There are many activities. There are lots of girls wanting to play, be outside, and be themselves. No boys, just be yourself. Wake up and there will be three or four friends. "There are no strangers here, only friends you haven't met yet" You will learn about friends, and girls that will not be your best friends, but you will learn how to get along with them anyway, you will learn to be away from your family and gain confidence, you will try to achieve goals you set for yourself, you will not watch t.v., and you will learn to entertain yourself with the simple things. To laugh, to listen to understand and to have fun. Join us at Oconto. A place where you can be yourself!
