Camps are very conscious, attentive and responsive to the fact that children are in their care. Camps see responsibility for their campers as a trust and uphold high standards to preserve that trust and the confidence of parents.
There is no government-set or -run accreditation requirement, but over the years, camps in Canada have come together in both national organizations (such as the Canadian Camping Association and Christian Camping International) Canadian and provincial camping associations. The latter, in particular, have helped establish industry-led standards. Association membership is voluntary; some camps may choose to be accredited through their respective provincial camping association.
The Ontario Camping Association was founded in 1937, with its OCA Standards offering day and residential camps in Ontario a benchmark for sound camp operation and administration. OCA members regularly review and revise the standards, which cover almost every aspect of a camp's operation, from health and food service to programs, overnight trips and more.
You will likely come across a number of associations and regulating bodies in your camp search. Visit the
Camp Associations page for links to national and provincial associations and organizations.
