My child has special needs. Is there a camp for her?

    Is this helpfull?
A range of camps meets the needs of children with physical, emotional, behavioural or medical challenges. Some focus on children with cancer or other medical conditions; others have programs for children with autism or attention deficit disorder.

Some general residential and day camps include programs that integrate a number of children with certain special needs. Other camps are completely focused on meeting the needs of children who need specific adaptations and support to enjoy camp.

and I was lucky enough to have Catherine's daughter as a camper (and she had mine!). I also know that many camps can handle food allergies also. Just takes a little research and usually a visit to the camp to talk to the actual staff.

Whatever their mandate, and whether the camp provides shadows or support staff or requires parents to send someone familiar and experienced in working with their child, these camps have staff trained to cope with children with special needs, as well as challenge and offer them a rewarding time at camp. Their medical staff and facilities are adapted to meet the needs of the children they serve.

Yes there are all kinds of camps and programs out there for kids with all kinds of special needs and camp gives them the freedom and space they need. The first year my daughter went I was lucky enough to volunteer for the camp and they put me with other children not her and I just watched her flurish and enjoy.

Ontario Pioneer Camp won the Canadian Down Syndrome Society’s “Spirit of Inclusive Community Award”. The award is given to a community group "that has shown outstanding support for the full inclusion of people with Down syndrome through special projects, or group activities”. But the "Inclusion Program" is for any child with exceptionalities. You can read more about their program here: http://bit.ly/9II6O2
